Colleges offering College Specific Scholarships

These highly regarded colleges and university's offer 4 year scholarships for students whom quailfy that only applies to that college/university.  Please see the list below!  These opportunities are awesome!  Remember to view these colleges websites and virtual tours to ensure they have the major you are interested in!

University of Virginia



Offers a Jefferson Scholarship in the amount of  $240,000 for four years!  If you are interested in out of state colleges please see me as I will nominate you for this Scholarship.  You must exhibit extraodinary intellectual range and depth and possess the highest qualities of leadership, scholarship, and citizenship.  Please reflect upon your strength of schedule if you are considering being nominated!  Then see me as I am the nominator!  I may just nominate someone secretly too :-). If you receive such an honor you do NOT need to commit to U of V.  Yet, it gives you excellent options!

Saint Michael's College

As a graduate of a Catholic High School, you may quailify for the $20,000 Four year Schoalrship that St, Michael's offers.  St. Michael's College is located in Burlington, Vermont.  This college wants to make afforadable Catholic Education at the Collegiate level.  They remain true to thier mission from 1904 by continuing to educate students in the light of the Catholic faith.  Tehy havea  strong community activist program.  PLease visit their website at: smcvt.edu for information reagrding majors and campus life!

Assumption College

Assumption College, located in Worcester, Massachusetts, is offering a $2500 -$22,000 schoalrship per year for students who have graduated from Niagara Catholic High School.  Other criteria are; critical intelligence, thoughtful citizebshp and compassionate service.  Assumptions is a liberal arts college with 42 majors and 48 minors.  The newest programs are a new campus in Rome, Italy, criminology program, educatin double major,and sports management.

College Visits and Open Houses

There will be a virtual tour of many colleges in our surrounding area from 10-6-10/12.  Please take advantage of this opportunity especially if traveling to some of these colleges is difficult.

Hi Educator,

I would like to invite your high school students to our free virtual college fair for the state of NY and surrounding states!  This fair is scheduled for October 6th-11^th.  The students can log on any time during this week and get information from many colleges.  There is a question and answer section for the students to get answer directly from college reps.  If you would like to offer your students extra credit for participating in this free college fair I can provide you a list of students from your school that registered and participated in the virtual fair, just e-mail me at tpendleton@collegefairsonline.com and let me know if you want a list.  The students must go to www.collegefairsonline.com to the students tab to register ASAP and we will send them a reminder e-mail the day before the fair starts.  This service is completely free and we would love to have your school and students join.   Please have your students register as soon as possible and choose the NY fair if they would like to participate.  If you would like to hand out flyers you can download them at the bottom of the student page on our website.  Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything.

Lasell continues to grow and thrive being noted as "the best kept secret near Boston" with a wonderful liberal arts program.  They recently celebrated the arrival of five new full time faculty in their growing programs which are Exercise Science, Communication Education, Criminal Justice, and Biology.  Their newest additional programs include multi-disciplinary and "knowledge perspective" courses.  Also, a new concentration in Entertainment Media within the communication major was added.

How to Write for a Scholarship

Scholarship Essay Guide/Essay

Master the Basics

Pay attention to details for a high quality essay.

Get organized.  Brainstorm to generate some good ideas and then create an outline to help you get started.

Demonstrate originality and creativity.  To catch the attention of a panel of scholarship judges, find a hook that will get the reader interested right away.

Show, don't tell.  For example, if you're describing an activity you participated in, don't describe it in general terms.  Be specific.  What duties did you perform?  What affect did it have on your life or the lives of others?

Develop a theme that fits the scholarship.  What of student is the sponsor looking for?  Include elements in your essay that complement the sponsor's expectations (without pretending to be someone you aren't).

Turn in a professional looking essay.  Write a second draft to catch the mistakes and better organize your thoughts.  If possible, type and doublet your essay.  Checking spelling and grammar.  Also, share your essay with friends, family, or teachers for another proofread.

Personal Achievements

• Remember to personalize your experience.  For example, what makes the volunteer and community service you've performed unique?
• Do you still keep in touch with anyone you've helped?
• Talk about specific interactions you may have had  with others.  How did you influence their lives?
• How did your achievements reflect your values?  Why are your achievements important to you?
• Remember that judges want to hear from you as a person, not your resume. 

Academic Plans and Possible Major

• Instead of saying, "Math is my favorite subject," discuss a specific assignment or project that you worked on that sparked your interest and why.
• Avoid saying that you selected a major or career path to "help people."  What specific actions can you take to improve the lives of others?  Discuss specific values or ideas you want to develop once you get to college.

Background and Influences

• In there a person you wish to emulate with your chosen major or career path?  Someone who encouraged you to suceed?  Focus on specific qualities or actions that the person has inspired in you.
• Think about your friends and family, community, and the things you've learned outside of the classroom.  Pick specific people, incidents and learning experiences to write about that will let your personality come through.

Current Events and Social Issues

• Think about current issues or events in the news that you feel strongly about.
• Do you know a lot about a controversial topics?
• Do you know of someone who is directly invovled in an issue who might be able to provide insight?
