How to Write for a Scholarship
Scholarship Essay Guide/Essay
Master the Basics
Pay attention to details for a high quality essay.
Get organized. Brainstorm to generate some good ideas and then create an outline to help you get started.
Demonstrate originality and creativity. To catch the attention of a panel of scholarship judges, find a hook that will get the reader interested right away.
Show, don't tell. For example, if you're describing an activity you participated in, don't describe it in general terms. Be specific. What duties did you perform? What affect did it have on your life or the lives of others?
Develop a theme that fits the scholarship. What of student is the sponsor looking for? Include elements in your essay that complement the sponsor's expectations (without pretending to be someone you aren't).
Turn in a professional looking essay. Write a second draft to catch the mistakes and better organize your thoughts. If possible, type and doublet your essay. Checking spelling and grammar. Also, share your essay with friends, family, or teachers for another proofread.
I Don't Know What to Write About!!
Personal Achievements
- Remember to personalize your experience. For example, what makes the volunteer and community service you've performed unique?
- Do you still keep in touch with anyone you've helped?
- Talk about specific interactions you may have had with others. How did you influence their lives?
- How did your achievements reflect your values? Why are your achievements important to you?
- Remember that judges want to hear from you as a person, not your resume.
Academic Plans and Possible Major
- Instead of saying, "Math is my favorite subject," discuss a specific assignment or project that you worked on that sparked your interest and why.
- Avoid saying that you selected a major or career path to "help people." What specific actions can you take to improve the lives of others? Discuss specific values or ideas you want to develop once you get to college.
Background and Influences
- In there a person you wish to emulate with your chosen major or career path? Someone who encouraged you to suceed? Focus on specific qualities or actions that the person has inspired in you.
- Think about your friends and family, community, and the things you've learned outside of the classroom. Pick specific people, incidents and learning experiences to write about that will let your personality come through.
Current Events and Social Issues
- Think about current issues or events in the news that you feel strongly about.
- Do you know a lot about a controversial topics?
- Do you know of someone who is directly invovled in an issue who might be able to provide insight?

WNY Mensa Scholarship Program
The purpose of this email is to inform you about a scholarship opportunity for high school seniors. Please pass this information on to your students. The Mensa Education and Research Foundation scholarship program is open now, and students from your school are eligible to apply. Since your college-bound students are likely to be working on their essays now, it is probably a good time to inform them about this scholarship, as it is also based on writing an essay. There are several general scholarships available at the national and regional levels, and in addition to that, Western New York Mensa has another $500 local scholarship that will go to a student from our chapter's area. (Our area includes the Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Erie and Niagara counties, and the western areas of Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming and Allegany counties.) The application process is entirely electronic: all necessary information, as well as the application forms are available on the MERF website: www.mensafoundation.org/scholarships The deadline for applications is January 15, 2015. Please feel free to use the attached flyer to inform your students about this scholarship program. Thank you for helping us spread the word. The MENSA Education
& Research Foundation
Scholarship Program is now open! Go to www.mensafoundation.org/scholarships to submit your application by January 15, 2015 Why apply? • Scholarships are merit based; applications are judged solely by the essay submitted online. • Scholarship winners receive their award check directly, enabling the funds to be used for the winner’s highest priority needs during the school year. • It’s just really cool to have a MENSA Scholarship on your resume. The Mensa Education & Research Foundation Scholarship program awards thousands of dollars every year to students. Since 1997, the Foundation has given more than $900,000 in scholarships. The amount of money available for awards is about $85,000 a year. In addition, many scholarships funded by local Mensa Chapters are awarded. Western NY Mensa usually awards one additional $500 scholarship to a local student. The Fine Print: • Applicants are required to write an essay, up to 550 words, as well as fill out a general application. Eligibility requirements for a general Mensa Foundation scholarship include legal U.S. residency and enrollment at an accredited U.S. institution of post-secondary education for the 2015-2016 academic year. (HINT: pay attention to the guidelines, ensure you have a goal clearly stated and supported, and proof your essay before submitting it.) • A number of Mensa Foundation scholarships are awarded with no restrictions regarding age, gender, academic grade point average or financial need, as long as the applicant resides in the area of a participating Local Group. Most scholarships are based solely on an essay written by the applicant, and special category scholarships are awarded to applicants who meet specific academic or personal requirements. • All applications must be submitted online on or before 11:59 p.m., Central time, on January 15, 2015. • The Mensa Education & Research Foundation is a philanthropic, non-profit, tax-exempt organization funded by gifts from members of American Mensa and other donors. The scholarship program is possible due to dedicated Mensa volunteers across the country. American Mensa is an organization open to anyone who scores in the top two percent on an accepted, standardized intelligence test. The organization has more than 57,000 members in the United States. For more information about Mensa, or to apply for membership, visit www.us.mensa.org or www.wny.us.mensa.org. ### Background: Mensa is an international society of people whose only qualification to join is scoring at or above the 98th percentile on an IQ test. Mensa takes no stand on politics, religion or social issues. The organization has no opinions -- but our members usually do. We provide members with intellectual stimulation and the opportunity to socialize with other bright people locally, regionally, and nationally. There are currently more than 100,000 members in over 40 countries worldwide. American Mensa (www.us.mensa.org), with more than 50,000 members, is the largest national Mensa. Western New York Mensa (www.wny.us.mensa.org) is a local chapter of American Mensa, which is part of Mensa International.
